Why A Little Bit Of Marketing Does You Good, Especially At Christmas

Posted by admin on July 22, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

My grandpa, who’s a Quaker, used to disapprove of the fact that I ventured into marketing, but he’s coming round to my way of thinking, even at the grand age of 92. He is suspicious of marketing (in his mind - a term synonymous with extracting money from a gullible party, for the benefit of corporate greed) and doesn’t believe in profit, even though profit itself is not a bad thing.

I bring this issue up because in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s going to be Christmas soon and as usual any company which can exploit Christmas as a commercial theme is doing so. But before we exchange our Christmas wreath for cynicism on our front door, sometimes marketing can be beneficial and the creativity in marketing campaigns can be enjoyed by the consumer.

Take for instance (but not for instant) Starbucks Coffee Company, no longer is it just a coffee company! If you’re still refusing to do your Christmas shopping online, marketing executives at Starbucks have come up with a few ideas so that you can break the shopping up with interludes of Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte or Toffee Nut Latte ( http://starbucks.co.uk/en-GB/_Favorite+Beverages/Christmas+Beverages.htm ). You could even come back after the shopping and have a Chocolate Mint Bliss or Mint Chocolate Chip Frappuccino. If Marketing brings Gingerbread Lattes, then it’s got to be a good thing.

It’s not just the high street shops which are getting festive. Online stores are getting into the Christmas spirit too, even finance companies; the traditional residences of Scrooge type characters. Moneynet, a personal finance information research specialist, has brought out a Christmas finance guide ( http://www.moneynet.co.uk/christmas-savings-guide/index.shtml ), with a range of money-saving tips to help the innocent consumer navigate their way past loan sharks who feed on the financial difficulties of certain families, particularly at Christmas.

But lets not dwell on the doom and gloom, lets think about the children, what’s marketing doing for them? Well… the Early Learning Centre has developed a special Christmas section ( http://www.elc.co.uk/category-720 ) on its website to inspire parents, grandparents and relatives with ideas of suitable gifts for the children. If your daughter is more into Stevie Wonder than Golden Wonder, then she might be impressed with the Pink Keyboard And Stool; though remember, musical toys last for years not just for Christmas, it’s your sanity at stake.

But Christmas isn’t just for the kids, it’s for the “big kids” too. Justtoys is a site which sells toys for parents, buying toys for their children. If my parents are reading this, or even my colleagues, I quite fancy the Radio Control Dalek http://www.justtoys.com/toy.asp/Toy/33/buy/radio-control-dalek.htm which offers seven phrases triggered by buttons on the remote control, 360 degree on the spot rotational movement and the Dome and Eyestalk move from side to side as it moves. Beats slippers and writing paper any day.

Marketing and commercial competition has also made a fantastic choice available on the internet and it gives us ideas, when we’ve run out of inspiration ourselves. So whilst we need to remain sceptical about advertising, there are some advantages to profit investment …

… and Starbucks Chocolate Mint Bliss is one of them.

Creative Business Innovation: How Do You Innovate Your Way Out of Your Marketing Box

Posted by admin on July 21, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

You must have seen the festive puzzle with nine dots (three dots in three rows)

o o o

o o o

o o o

and your task is to trace through all the dots in four straight lines without lifting your pen from the page? (The solution is below.)

What does this teach us about creative solutions? Well if we allow ourselves to be limited by what appears to be the box made up of the outside dots, we cannot solve the puzzle. However if we challenge our apparent limitations and several of the lines begin or finish outside the box, the solution is easy and obvious.

How different will tomorrow’s products be?

The other day when I was working with a client whose products are successful today. I felt that this was (naturally) constraining her thoughts and she was having difficulty in seeing her customers’ needs with fresh eyes.
I used this dotty puzzle to help her recognise that how success was condemning her to incrementally improve her products rather than radically replace them. She could then see that new entrants to her industry can see what her customers want and are already designing tomorrow’s products.

How do you change your innovative focus?

As we talked and worked on this insight, my client made three new resolutions:

We then designed an innovation program where my client approached a dozen of her key customers and spent a couple of hours with each of them, asking for their ideas and listening to the help they gave.

How do you handle the missing information?

Having listened to her customers, we still had gaps in the information we needed to design the new products. For many small businesses, many decisions are taken with incomplete information because they do not have the time or resources to research decisions fully before taking them.

So we adopted four more resolutions (in order of discomfort) to help us flesh out the skeletal ideas we had:

How to put this into practice?

If what I have said about innovation is a foreign language, please do not ignore it; find someone to help you understand it because my experience shows that this approach to product innovation is important.

If you need a clue to solving the puzzle: draw three lines from the top left corner, allowing the vertical and horizontal lines to extend outside the box, then draw a diagonal line through the untouched dots to join these two ‘out of the box’ lines.

I hope this puzzle has stirs you to taking a new view on your problems - I really enjoy coaching business people who create wealth through new ideas.

Angels We Have Heard and Seen

Posted by admin on June 26, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

My favorite part of the holiday season is its steady reminder of angels. Christmas cards reflect angelic gatherings in star-filled night skies. Ancient carols tell of angels spreading great joy, or watching over shepherds and sleeping children. Decorative angels are prominently displayed on neighbors’ doors; swathed in gold and surrounded by a sea of fragrant greenery.

Throughout the years, my family’s Christmas tree has become an homage to angelic beings. A folk art angel, crafted in muslin and cinnamon sticks, graces the lower branches. Commercially produced angels that have captured my heart over time fill the middle space. My favorite ornaments, two intricately painted angels purchased at a 1988 craft show, hold positions of honor each year. Finally, a band of tiny Hallmark cherubs play their joyful tune from the highest branches.

For several years as a single parent, I managed to purchase a little tree for my bedroom. The children were school age and our family tree was festooned with figures of Santa Claus, Sesame Street, and their own handmade masterpieces. My special tree was adorned with twinkling white lights, unlit candles in colonial holders, and a collection of angel ornaments. Its’ spiritual presence in my tiny personal space left me feeling watched over and comforted.

Angels do that, don’t they?

Whether observed at Christmas, Easter, or any day of the year, their existence helps us to feel supported. But do they only hover overhead, keeping their watch from the heavens?

I don’t believe angels simply remain aloft and out of reach.

The holidays can bring feelings of isolation and loneliness when one is single. But you, too, have a group of heavenly hosts in human form - your family, friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. Take the opportunity this season to recognize your angels whether you witness them in:

the stranger who sees you struggling with a heavy load and stops to hold the door.

the babysitter who offers to stay a few minutes longer when you’re frantic and running late.

the family member who observes a tight budget and slips a few dollars in your pocket.

the co-worker who brings a tray of cookies to work on the morning you didn’t have time for breakfast.

the friend who offers to hem your dress or provide an extra casserole for your holiday function.

your own little cherub who goes to great lengths to hide a school-made card reminding you of their love.

They are there; standing guard, caring and serving, waiting to be noticed.

May you experience the joy and support of angels both near and far this holiday season.

If live music is your thing, Asheville is the place to be

Posted by admin on June 17, 2008 in Entertainment World, Great Music Tips, Universe Of Travel

As you peruse all of the Asheville tourist info that’s out there, make sure you consider the area’s live music scene as you make your travel plans. Asheville has one of the most vibrant live music scenes in the country. In fact, it has recently made headlines nationally thanks to The Orange Peel on Biltmore Avenue downtown. The club has hosted Bob Dylan, The Indigo Girls, Ben Harper, The Flaming Lips, Todd Rundgren, Son Volt, a nine-show residency by the Smashing Pumpkins, and many other major shows. And in April 2008, Rolling Stone named the club one of America’s top five music venues.

Still, the Asheville music experience is about much more than what fans can take in at the Orange Peel. Top national, regional and local artists play also at the Grey Eagle on Clingman Avenue, where you can also enjoy food from Twin Cousins Kitchen, a southern Louisiana eatery owned and operated by native New Orleans chef Arthur Douglass. Some of the best vacations in Asheville, NC, have included time for activities such as sampling microbrews at the French Broad Brewery Tasting Room on Fairview Road near Biltmore Village while enjoying a performance by a local or touring singer-songwriter. In the same building, you’ll find one of Asheville’s newest music venues, The Garage at Biltmore, where artists such as Colonel Bruce Hampton and Larry Keel perform.

The Asheville visitors’ information you’ve seen may have missed insider tips about the burgeoning community of west Asheville, the newest venue is The Rocket Club on Haywood Road, where groups like Asheville rising stars Stephanie’s Id and other cutting-edge artists perform. Further down Haywood you’ll find food, spirits and fabulous local and touring artists performing at the Westville Pub.

And don’t forget to check out who’s playing The Asheville Civic Center/Thomas Wolfe Auditorium and the Diana Wortham Theater.

All over town, the genres range from bluegrass to rock, from blues to jazz, from folk to pop, from new age to classical. So get out your city of Asheville map. At every level, the music scene in town is hot.

For a good round-up of what’s happening musically at any given time in Asheville (and across Western North Carolina), check The Mountain Xpress or the Asheville Citizen-Times Take Five section, both published weekly and distributed free in boxes all over the Asheville area.

Come Spend a Week or Two in My Dream Retirement Piece of Paradise!

Posted by admin on June 8, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

An early morning walk on the beach just as the sun rises and the morning breeze is gently blowing that warm morning air. I love my stays in Dorado Puerto Rico where I can finally relax and leave the frigid cold of winter back at home in Delaware. I love the sunsets in Dorado also but there is something about that first morning walk on the beach or my early morning coffee on the balcony, I sit back and read the morning paper or one of my favorite magazines. I enjoy the morning breezes while sipping a nice cup of java. On or about ten a.m. I can walk down to the beach where the anglers are coming in from that early morning trip out to sea with their catch of the day.

It is always a surprise to see what they have caught today. There is always something I like or something new to cook up and sample a new type of seafood. I can take it up to the rental unit clean it up and save it for that evening meal. I usually purchase something and save it for the grill. I look forward to starting up the grill in the evenings have a few drinks while my fresh catch of the day grills on the barbecue. This is my piece of paradise as I sit and enjoy my meal with a drink conversing with my family and friends taking in the beautiful sunsets on the rooftop terrace at Villas de Costa Mar Dorado Puerto Rico.

My big dream is not to come back next year and enjoy two to three weeks doing this day in and day out while exploring all that Puerto Rico has to offer but to come back in a few years and make this my retirement in paradise.

A week or two at Costa Mar is what every single person that sits in an office or works a nine to five, five days a week in a seasonal climate deserves. This is paradise if not but for a few days or weeks. We all crave that two weeks vacation on a tropical island just enjoying the weather and relaxing with our loved ones. You owe it to yourself and to your families to get away with them and experience what wonders a paradise island like Puerto Rico has to offer. Dorado Puerto Rico is the perfect location just thirty minutes from SJU airport, twenty minutes from old San Juan right on the north coast of the island. You are still on American soil here and enjoy all the safety comforts of being home. You are governed and protected by the same laws and it is just two to three hours from the main land.

There is so much to do on this island paradise that even if you woke each morning and took a short car ride each day to a different destination to do something new it would take you several weeks to cover all that there is to do on this island paradise. 3 Great Thanksgiving Party Ideas

Posted by admin on May 26, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

Happy Thanksgiving! You’ve invited a dozen guests and they’re all expecting to eat. You know that you don’t want to spend the whole holiday in the kitchen, so what are you going to do? Get up at 3 am to put a turkey in the oven? No. How about buying a precooked turkey this year or even purchasing deli sliced turkey and cheese for a sandwich buffet? That way your guests can eat while they mingle, you won’t be in the kitchen while everyone’s talking and there won’t be a bunch of dishes to clean up.

Most Thanksgiving parties involve a lot of people, your relatives, and his relatives, some who don’t get along; all trying to cram in at the dinner table in a house that suddenly feels too small. When things are like this it may be time to hold your party outside. You can easily hold a party at a park this time of year in the warmer climes. Or if you happen to live in a cold part of the country then invite people to join you at a restaurant or rent a dining hall in your area with lots of space. Do the cooking at home the day before and just head on over.

For those of you who like to take on new things this time of year may be a good time to introduce the family to a new way of eating. It may simply be eating healthier that you want to stress with less starches and more fruits and veggies on the table. Or you can really take a risk and cook a tofu turkey. Your guests may love it. They may also hate it and some not even notice.

A Guide To Life In Bulgaria

Posted by admin on May 16, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

More and more expatriates are attracted to Bulgaria each year.

These expatriates are drawn by the climate, the safe sandy beaches, the incredibly low cost of living and low prices generally, the historical heritage that Bulgaria offers and the welcome they get from the friendly Bulgarians.

While Bulgaria does not yet have the same destination appeal of Spain or Portugal say, all that is about to change as Bulgaria gets closer to entry into the EU in 2007.

Those choosing a new life in Bulgaria now are getting in ahead of the pack as this country is about to become very fashionable.

If you are thinking that Bulgaria might be the place for you what can you expect from life in Bulgaria? And which areas are attracting the main influx of expatriates?

The biggest growth rates in terms of expat population increase are expected in the more desirable areas in and around the major resort centres of Varna and Burgas. With further population development expected in other selected ‘premium quality’ locations on the Black Sea coast.

British expats already living in Bulgaria are attracted to the fact that you are far less likely to become a victim of crime in Bulgaria than on any UK street nowadays. Street crime in Bulgaria is rare, and general crimes against ‘the person’ are statistically lower compared to western European countries.

On the whole Bulgaria is a peaceful, law abiding and trouble free country and Bulgarians are friendly, warm and welcoming people.

Expatriates attracted to Bulgaria are rewarded with great beaches a sunny climate and attractions as diverse as wine tasting, aqua parks, ancient monuments, nature parks, music and flower festivals.

And the cost of living is incredibly low.

The economic forecast for Bulgaria.

Since 1989 Bulgaria has been going through a successful transformation from a state controlled economy to an open market economy - so successful has the transformation proved to be that Bulgaria has been invited to join the European Union with membership time-tabled for 2007.

In general financial analysts agree that Bulgaria is currently undervalued, and therefore base costs are lower than the market realisation set against forecasts of growth and increased investment flows.

In terms of what this means to those living in Bulgaria - the costs of living are exceptional low. But this is not going to last forever.

Bulgaria is currently benefiting from the European Union’s heavy investment into the country. Millions of Euro dollars being spent on upgrading the country’s roads and airports and schemes such as the “Beautiful Bulgaria Project” are being set up to refurbish the historical and architectural gems of Bulgaria.

All this work is meant to encourage new private investment to help bring Bulgaria more in line with its European neighbours in time for the 2007 EU entry.

This means that Bulgaria is increasing as a tourist and expat destination of choice year on year and those living in Bulgaria will only benefit as the country moves strongly towards EU entry.

Valentines Day Flowers

Posted by admin on May 10, 2008 in Universe Of Travel

Flowers have long been a coveted and integral aspect of Valentine’s Day traditions. Ever since the advent of Valentine’s Day festivities, flowers have symbolized the essence of the day. On this special day, whether it is a single flower or a garland, the sole expression reflected is the message of love.

History reveals that the tradition of giving flowers on St. Valentine’s Day first became popular in the seventeenth century with the introduction of “the language of flowers” (Persian poetical art) to the west by Charles II of Sweden. During those days, flowers were amongst the most common ways to communicate non-verbal messages of love or friendship.

The conventional significance endorsed with the rose synchronizes Goddess Venus’s favorite flower with Valentine’s Day. Moreover, the symbolic connotation of love, romance, and passion associated with the rose qualifies it as the preferred choice for St. Valentine’s Day.

Roses symbolize love, but their many colors have special meanings. While the red rose remains the ultimate symbol of romantic love and enduring passion during Valentine’s Day, other colors of the daynamely white, pink, and yellowalso merge with the meaning of the roses. For instance, white roses reflect purity of the mind and pink roses signify fun and happiness. A yellow rose on Valentine’s Day connotes friendship.

Other flowers also color Valentine’s Day with their fragrance. A posy flamboyant amaryllis and red lilies could be a wonderful way to communicate greetings for Valentine’s Day. Scented white tuberoses and sunflowers that spell admiration and adulation are also well in tune with the sentiments of the day.

Flowers for Valentine’s Day reveal the unraveled emotions, which often cannot be expressed through words. Nowadays, flashy and ostentatious gifts are the priorities for the day, however this in no way undermines the significance of flowers. The legacy of generations to make the most of nature’s bountiful flora to convey the sentimental finesse that adorns the day reiterates the strong bonding between flowers and Valentine’s Day.

Valentines Day provides detailed information on Valentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day Gifts, Valentine’s Day Gift Baskets, Valentine’s Day Cards and more. Valentines Day is affiliated with Mexican Holidays.
