Election Period in Britain Affects Major Decisions for the Telecom Industry

Posted by admin on February 12, 2010 in Consumer Issues, Tech, Universe Of Telecommunication

The UK’s mobile broadband services and the telecom industry are still awaiting allotment of new spectrum to be able to increase their 3G and broadband services (click to compare mobile broadband). The issue of spectrum availability and its allotment has been pending for a long time. Initially this issue was scheduled to be addressed in 2008 with an auction of spectrum; however, due to legal issues and disagreements within the industry itself the auction was called off.

Though the issues still remain unresolved it is time that the government and politician stepped in to take charge of the situation and resolve it as soon as possible. Though this would seem like the best solution it is high unlikely that the government would be able to conduct the spectrum auction in 2010 as it is an election year, stated Kip Meek, the UK’s independent spectrum advisor.

Meek said that not only was the industry in doubt about its position but the spectrum issue had been left unattended for a long time now. He said that he believed that the UK had an opportunity at hand to redefine and implement the next generation mobile if action was taken immediately. Meek said that he could see a lot of advances and transformation in televisions and mobiles and that this industry should not be neglected.

He urged the politicians to deal with this issue immediately and not to ignore it. Meek addressed a Westminster eForum on the digital switchover, and commented that probably politicians were giving this issue the cold shoulder and ignoring it as it would not help them generate votes. He urged them to reconsider their decision and not make this issue a policy-making orphan and give it its due importance.

Getting Real Interviews at Job Faires

Posted by admin on January 25, 2010 in Tools + Resources, Universe Of Telecommunication, Web Templates + More

Standing out at a Job Faire can make a difference in your job search. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Silicon Valley Career Fair in early 2010, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 job fairs scheduled for this year across the United States.

How do you rise above the crowd at a Career Faire? The contention can be significant, but you can help yourself stand out from the herd with advance homework. At AA-Careers, we have a simplified six-step process to get ready. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, research the organizations that are going and pick your targets. Use the web to research the organizations that are there before you go. Go to their sites and see if they have their openings listed. Pick a sensible number to target, and get ready to spend an hour or more researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 10 in a day, and 3-5 is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring company, you want to know: executive names, recent news, and key product lines. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the company is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the prerequisites of the job. Make the language match. If the hiring organization calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring organization.

Third, create a ‘mini sales pitch’ for each likely organization/position combination. Write down a 60 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat out loud describing why you are a fantastic prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet people at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re targeting. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job description. Especially at a Career Faire, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be very easy to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, rehearse your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each position - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly tagged folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be well groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any eau de cologne or fragrance meagerly, if at all.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Finding a Job Using the Web to Succeed

Posted by admin on December 28, 2009 in Tools + Resources, Universe Of Telecommunication, Web Templates + More

A modern job search campaign is by nature fairly Byzantine. While the internet has offered a variety of new channels, it also creates increased competition for choice jobs and potential challenges for job hunters.

Job search needs to be thought of as a personal, very aimed marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an ad. Your extended network of colleagues is your source for information and opportunities.

So where does the net fit in? At AA-Careers, we recently posted a job on a popular job board and got hundreds and hundreds responses in a week. For one position. That’s increased job hunting competition.

Had a great candidiate called us ahead of our posting that ad, they could have secured the position before having all that competition. How? By finding someone who knows an employee at our company who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew about of the job for at least 7 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful how you submit your application as well. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily eliminated with a speedy triage process. How? The same way any employer would. By eliminating resumes where the objective didn’t match our job. By passing over candidates whose cover letters gave us reasons not to hire them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating job hunters whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by passing over candidates who didn’t bother to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the good news is that job boards give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of jobs. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still compete, if you have a well thought out resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another downside to be aware of is how easily you can be looked up on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some personal web pages that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to rock our thoughts about who to hire.

AA-Careers provides a comprehensive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Internet Biggies Face Off with Mandelson Over Clause 17

Posted by admin on in Consumer Issues, Social Issues, Universe Of Telecommunication

The Digital Britain initiatives promoted by Lord Peter Mandelson are once more in the spotlight. This time it is the changes to the existing Digital Economy Bill that are drawing the flak from top honchos of the internet industry.

Global leaders and internet biggies Ebay, Facebook, Google and Yahoo! have launched a serious protest against Clause 17 of the Digital Economy Bill. The clause, according to the protestors, accords unwarranted power to the Secretary of State to change copyright law significantly. Given this, top management from all these companies have sent a written petition to the Secretary of State, urging him to remove this particular clause from the bill.

The protestors claim that the clause gives ‘wide and sweeping’ powers to the UK government to make policy changes to copyright laws without going through a comprehensive legislative process.

The protestors also emphasised their full support for progressive developments in digital ventures and for the other Digital Britain initiatives presented by Lord Carter. However, they said that this clause would be a serious hindrance to freedom and independence of the public in accessing data. They also fear that the clause can be interpreted in such a way as to enable unnecessary and extensive supervision of user activity even when no illegal activity takes place.

Ebay, Facebook, Yahoo! and Google have stated that this clause and it ramifications may seriously hamper growth in the digital industry and may work against the very ideas outlined in the bill by restricting developments and dampening further interest in innovations.

Mobile Broadband Networks Slowing Down due to High Usage

Posted by admin on December 2, 2009 in Consumer Issues, Tech, Universe Of Telecommunication

Given the predictions for exponential growth in mobile broadband traffic in the coming years, the industry is gearing up to meet the higher demand. However, experts believe the expected usage will be so high that the existing network will be unable to meet all the needs fully.

In fact, analysts warn that mobile service networks are already buckling under heavy usage. The data flow is expected to increase at least 25 times by 2012, according to telecoms analysis firm Informa Telecoms and Media. In some areas, the increasing load of data that has to be carried across the network has already begun to tell badly upon the service. This is especially true in high usage areas like London and New York.

Speaking about the problem, Dimitris Mavrakis of Informa remarked that markets are becoming saturated quickly in the UK and the US. Experts say the problem will worsen due to the use of 3G smartphones, which will enable easy access to mobile broadband service and thus increase the number of people accessing the internet at any given point of time. The boom in the mobile broadband industry is bound to start having an impact on the quality of service.

LTE technology is believed to be the only effective solution to the growing traffic problem. However, there is a long wait until this is fully deployed. Till then, users will have to make do with HSPA+, which will enhance the existing systems in a stop gap arrangement.

O2 Criticized for Excessive Data Limit Penalty

Posted by admin on August 8, 2009 in Consumer Issues, Universe Of Telecommunication, Universe Of Travel

O2 recently explained its fee structure for downloading data once you have exceeded your maximum prescribed limit for downloads. The company accepted that its fee is very high but said that it is so to ensure that people do not download too much and others can have a good experience as well. Charging more than £200 for every excess GB discourages people from downloading too much, the company said.

However, to make sure that people do not inadvertently exceed the maximum limit, the company messages them when they finish half of their limit, then 90% of it and then when they exceed it. The company’s spokesperson recently said that very few of their customers actually exceed their maximum limit since the company helps in managing their download by keeping them informed about their rate of downloads. This also helps others who want a faster system.

Some customers believe that they face a lot of difficulty, as they do not know their download limits. Another problem with the policy is that the data downloaded overseas is not included in this download limit. While you are on international roaming, you have to pay separate roaming price for downloading or streaming any data. However, the consequences and implications of it have not been explained by O2 mobile broadband. As a result, the customer remains unaware of the exact policies, leading to grievances later.
