Diesel Powered Subaru Forester Launches in Australia

Posted by admin on June 23, 2010 in Cars + Rides, Consumer Issues

The long-awaited Subaru Forester Diesel has recently been launched to the Australian market. The world?s first flat four cylinder diesel engine was used previously in Subaru Legacy?s and Outbacks since 2008. The newly launched Forester 2.0D has the identical engine, specifically manufactured and engineered by Subaru for this car. The car boasts excellent fuel economy and enhanced ?greenness”.

According to Subaru, ?this is the world?s first horizontally-opposed diesel engine to be featured in a passenger car. This is the Subaru Boxer Diesel.? The engine has low vibration and astonishingly highly responsive acceleration. This is a unique diesel engine with the boxer diesel sports boasting a six-speed manual transmission. There are no current plans to offer this model in automatic.

Features of the Forester 2.0D include a very compact engine with an aluminum block to lessen weight. The Forester handles well, has large space and leg room, and is fuel efficient. Fuel consumption for the basic Forester is about 45 mpg. The Forester has a 14 gallon fuel tank, and that means you can go a long way on a tank of fuel (about 850 miles). The Forester?s towing power is greater at lower revs, than other identical vehicles. In spite of being considerably taller than previous models of the Forester, the new diesel engine lowers the central gravity on the car.

While the engine does have a diesel sound (after all, it is a diesel), the sound is not excessive or cloying. The ride is smooth and definitely is more car-like than truck-like. There are five comfortable seats, which all have plenty of leg and headroom. No matter how the seats are adjusted, they are comfortable and plush. The back seats fold perfectly flat. Visibility in the car is excellent, thanks to the wide expanse of glass.

Extras include 17-inch alloy wheels (instead of the standard 16-inch), roof rails, and a seven-speaker surround-sound audio system. Forester Diesel options include a navigation system and leather seats.

So, this is a car that is a pleasure to drive, that has good fuel efficiency, that is well-designed for the comfort of the driver and passengers. Definitely worth a close look.

An oil change should be performed regularly every six months as part of the standard vehicle service, but in no event less than once a year. A vehicle service would include rotating the tires, tuning the engine, checking the computer - in general, making sure the motorcar is in complete running order.

CLA Pushes for Rural Broadband

Posted by admin on March 19, 2010 in Consumer Issues, Tech, Universe Of Telecommunication

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is requesting the government to release grants for broadband access to rural homes. At the Digital Dales event to be held today, plans will be released which aim at providing broadband access to rural areas which currently lack fast internet access. Charles Trotman from the CLA has told the BBC that they are currently planning to send proposals to this effect in the next few weeks to the Digital Britain team.

The BBC has also reported that in an interesting turn, the people of Wennington have gone ahead to start their own broadband service for the community. A cattle farmer explained the system saying that there was a agreement that all the broadband users signed.

Under the agreement, people would only use the internet services for work and official purposes till offices shut, about 5PM. During office hours, no one would use sites like iPlayer, YouTube or sites for online gaming. Come the evening, all bets were off, and everyone was allowed to use the network for their personal use. The farmer said that although the speed was a little slow in the evenings, it was the best that they had.

Digital Britain plans to introduce a universal service obligation for broadband with a minimum of 2MB download speed to all rural homes by 2012. The CLA, while in agreement with this plan, also wants a public-private partnership to ensure that funds will be available when the plans are to be implemented.

Election Period in Britain Affects Major Decisions for the Telecom Industry

Posted by admin on February 12, 2010 in Consumer Issues, Tech, Universe Of Telecommunication

The UK’s mobile broadband services and the telecom industry are still awaiting allotment of new spectrum to be able to increase their 3G and broadband services (click to compare mobile broadband). The issue of spectrum availability and its allotment has been pending for a long time. Initially this issue was scheduled to be addressed in 2008 with an auction of spectrum; however, due to legal issues and disagreements within the industry itself the auction was called off.

Though the issues still remain unresolved it is time that the government and politician stepped in to take charge of the situation and resolve it as soon as possible. Though this would seem like the best solution it is high unlikely that the government would be able to conduct the spectrum auction in 2010 as it is an election year, stated Kip Meek, the UK’s independent spectrum advisor.

Meek said that not only was the industry in doubt about its position but the spectrum issue had been left unattended for a long time now. He said that he believed that the UK had an opportunity at hand to redefine and implement the next generation mobile if action was taken immediately. Meek said that he could see a lot of advances and transformation in televisions and mobiles and that this industry should not be neglected.

He urged the politicians to deal with this issue immediately and not to ignore it. Meek addressed a Westminster eForum on the digital switchover, and commented that probably politicians were giving this issue the cold shoulder and ignoring it as it would not help them generate votes. He urged them to reconsider their decision and not make this issue a policy-making orphan and give it its due importance.

Residing Homes

Posted by admin on February 11, 2010 in Consumer Issues, Real Estate Stuff, School of Home Improvement

How you choose to reside in your home influences each of the seven steps. Water, contribute to and dust provide the conditions and ingredients for mold, insects, mice, rats, roaches and dust mites to make their residence in your home. Pests within your home can account for allergic reactions; pests lead to the use of pesticides that are not good for people to digest or consumeFood and water are an incitement for pests to live in your home. If you keep your home clean and dry you will possess a home that is healthy and comfortable for you at the same time that it is not being a friendly place for the unwelcome Great ventilation.

Ventilation removes stale air from your h ome and brings fresh air back into the home. This helps to remove a few of the pollution that builds up inside your home. But you must use the fans or ventilation system in order to keep your home from becoming stale and unhealthy. If ventilation is lacking, moisture can build up and increase the humidity in your home. High humidity levels cause the air to be sticky and uncomfortable for most people. Mold and dust mites, however, love high humidity. So comfort and fine indoor air quality go hand in hand.

Burning gas or oil creates combustion products such as carbon monoxide these should never be present in a healthy home. Cigerette or cigar smoking is a form of combustion; so don’t let any person smoke inside your home. Keep your home a healthy home.

Things people bring into homes and hoard inside can often lead to problems. The containers that store toxic chemical cleaning compounds, solvents and oil-based paints slowly release unhealthy chemicals into the indoor air. It’s best not bring these products into your home.

Internet Biggies Face Off with Mandelson Over Clause 17

Posted by admin on December 28, 2009 in Consumer Issues, Social Issues, Universe Of Telecommunication

The Digital Britain initiatives promoted by Lord Peter Mandelson are once more in the spotlight. This time it is the changes to the existing Digital Economy Bill that are drawing the flak from top honchos of the internet industry.

Global leaders and internet biggies Ebay, Facebook, Google and Yahoo! have launched a serious protest against Clause 17 of the Digital Economy Bill. The clause, according to the protestors, accords unwarranted power to the Secretary of State to change copyright law significantly. Given this, top management from all these companies have sent a written petition to the Secretary of State, urging him to remove this particular clause from the bill.

The protestors claim that the clause gives ‘wide and sweeping’ powers to the UK government to make policy changes to copyright laws without going through a comprehensive legislative process.

The protestors also emphasised their full support for progressive developments in digital ventures and for the other Digital Britain initiatives presented by Lord Carter. However, they said that this clause would be a serious hindrance to freedom and independence of the public in accessing data. They also fear that the clause can be interpreted in such a way as to enable unnecessary and extensive supervision of user activity even when no illegal activity takes place.

Ebay, Facebook, Yahoo! and Google have stated that this clause and it ramifications may seriously hamper growth in the digital industry and may work against the very ideas outlined in the bill by restricting developments and dampening further interest in innovations.

Mobile Broadband Networks Slowing Down due to High Usage

Posted by admin on December 2, 2009 in Consumer Issues, Tech, Universe Of Telecommunication

Given the predictions for exponential growth in mobile broadband traffic in the coming years, the industry is gearing up to meet the higher demand. However, experts believe the expected usage will be so high that the existing network will be unable to meet all the needs fully.

In fact, analysts warn that mobile service networks are already buckling under heavy usage. The data flow is expected to increase at least 25 times by 2012, according to telecoms analysis firm Informa Telecoms and Media. In some areas, the increasing load of data that has to be carried across the network has already begun to tell badly upon the service. This is especially true in high usage areas like London and New York.

Speaking about the problem, Dimitris Mavrakis of Informa remarked that markets are becoming saturated quickly in the UK and the US. Experts say the problem will worsen due to the use of 3G smartphones, which will enable easy access to mobile broadband service and thus increase the number of people accessing the internet at any given point of time. The boom in the mobile broadband industry is bound to start having an impact on the quality of service.

LTE technology is believed to be the only effective solution to the growing traffic problem. However, there is a long wait until this is fully deployed. Till then, users will have to make do with HSPA+, which will enhance the existing systems in a stop gap arrangement.
