Surely hunters do not struggle with temptation. More specifically, turkey and deer hunters do not struggle with sexual temptation. I myself am not a hunter, truthfully I’ve never even held or shot a gun, perhaps that is why I struggle with temptation.
My uncle Tim told me recently about the whole hunting process that he goes through. My Uncle loves to hunt all kind of game, but he primarily hunts turkey and deer. After hearing him talk, I think turkeys are stupid, much like humans.
To get a turkey to come to the hunter, he or she will repoduce sounds that are very similar to what a hen (female) would while in heat. These male turkeys already have a harem of hens from wherever they call home, but that is not enough.
When the hunter makes these sounds, the male turkey will bolt out running straight towards the hunter.
It’s like music to his ear. Do turkeys have ears?
Apparently my uncle shot one of the largest turkeys in Georgia history recently. This turkey was a big dog. I imagined him as the pimp of his barn, the one who got all the ladies. He probably had it all but it was not enough. My uncle’s call promised something it could not deliver, but to the turkey it was perhaps what he was searching for.
As the turkey made his way out and over to where my uncle was located, I wonder what thoughts that ran through his mind. Could this be it? Could he finally have found the one that would satisfy all of his desires. Could what lay over that marshy land be any different that what he already has. Will it satisfy?
Humans are a lot like turkeys. We all want something that we don’t have and when we get it, we find out it did not satisfy. We leave what we know, we search things out, only to wind up in a bad situation. For this turkey it was death that awaited him over the hill.
Lustful temptation leads to the same path for all, promising what it cannot deliver. I suppose that most hunters struggle with stuff, but I could not imagine how they could struggle with temptation. Honestly, they tempt, they prowl, they seduce their prey into a situation that they control. Obviously if this were happening to them I’m sure they’d see it coming from afar.
I wish when it comes to any temptation we could all be like hunters. It seems so far away, the truth that is. Only the enticement is what I and probably you see. But there’s something so much more out there.
Can you feel it?
